It was cloudy outside, with no wind, as we were startled by the event they had just witnessed. It was going to rain soon, as I could tell. I always knew if it was going to rain. When I was just two years old, I told my mom it was going to rain, even though it was a beautiful day with tons of sunshine. It happened in the blink of an eye – the sky filled with clouds and rain poured down onto the ground. My mom was super upset because her new garden tool was ruined. My parents always know they can trust me more than the people on the news.
As we looked into the dark, cloudy sky, we tried to figure out what just happened. I was the most confused of the group; at least I think I was. I never thought I would be the one standing up to a bunch of freaks like the ones who were just here. Who were they? Why did they just attack and retreat. How did they disappear? Are they magic like my sunglasses? There were so many questions, but so little answers.
We headed home as it started raining. As we approached the tree, I thought for a second. “Hey guys,” I said. “Yeah,” They replied. “I was just thinking, we should hang more often and work on our moves.” “That sounds great!” Bret #2 said. We all snuck into our houses, soaking wet.
“Where have you been?” my mom shouted. “It’s been three hours. I thought you were just going to Dart!” “I saw some friends on the way home and they needed some help, so I decided to help them. Sorry I didn’t call,” “You better be Bret, I was wondering why you were taking so long, and I thought maybe you went into the back route.” I couldn’t believe she would think I would take the back route. The back route used to just be a trail that four-wheelers would use to goof around, but one day the air was super dry. Cole Billings was just getting back from vacation, and he felt like he just had to ride his four-wheeler. He went in, but hours later, no one could find him. A search team of three professionals went into the back route. Just one of them came out, but he went insane. He was put in a confined area, where they would put people like him to chill out.
No one goes back there, at least anyone smart enough knows to stay away. I was always curious what was back there. Who knows maybe it’s a giant snake or poisonous spider, a mutant animal, a killer that’s on the loose. There were so many answers, but this time, none of them truly answers the question.
As I stood up, it was all gone. The city was burned to the ground. Everyone was melted down and all that was left was skeletons. I was just standing there, ready for anything. I ran down to the bridge, and then I was touched on the shoulder. I looked around.
I woke up from the terrible dream. It was a nightmare. 2:43 A.M. I tried to fall asleep again, but I just couldn’t. I walked down to the kitchen to get a glass of water and I saw something outside the window. Who was that? What was it? I looked outside and it was walking away from our house, the way away from the tree. I quietly unlocked the door and used my secret method of silently opening doors.
It was intense. I felt like they were going to look back and see me. I grabbed the glasses out of the tree. I tried to find the person who ran by our house again. I spotted him and noticed he had a mask on. He all of the sudden just fell, right through the road. I ran towards the place he fell and I looked at it. I jumped three times – then I felt a hand on my leg.
I became aware of what happened about two hours later, when I found myself lying in my bed with a letter in my hand. It read:
Xf xjmm cf sfbez.
I tried to make sense of the letter, but I had no idea of what it meant. I fell asleep once again.
Screech! The noise woke me up. I quickly darted to the window to see what happened. It was just our neighbor, Matt Sheul. He was just starting to get lessons from his parents so he would be ready to take his driving test. He has been an adventurous person, but he doesn’t yet have the guts to go into the back route. No one does though. I knocked over the alarm clock as it started to go off as it does every weekday at 6:30.
I couldn’t believe Easter weekend had already passed. Tuesday was always a strange day at my school, but this day was even stranger. We were having a contest in the school on who could wear the most obnoxious Easter bunny costume. I was amazed that people actually dressed up for the event. I have no idea who won, but it was a scary day.
Ring! The final bell had rung. Everybody quickly left the class room. As I roamed the halls, I saw one of the Brets, Bret #3 to be exact. He wasn’t busy after school, so we biked to my house. I let him try on the sunglasses, and he enjoyed using them. He was actually quite good at using them. He showed me his spear.
“Hey Bret,” Bret #3 said. “Yeah,” I replied. “How did you get your sunglasses?” He asked. “They were an Easter basket gift; all my siblings got a pair too. How did you find your spear?” He paused for a second, but then he spoke, “I was hunting with my dad for some deer up north, way up by the boarder. I ran out because I saw a deer, and I heard a thump behind me. My dad had fallen off the side of the hill. I went to load the gun, but I saw a wolf attack the deer. I backed up and I tripped over my dad’s gun he had dropped.”
“Wow,” I exclaimed. “That’s quite a story.” “I’m not done yet,” Bret #3 went on. “I gave out a little cry, which made the wolf look my way. I ran away, down the side of the hill. It was the long way to my dad, but I didn’t want to fall down the hill. I was going as fast as I could, with the wolf on my tail. I tripped. I noticed a black spot in the snow where I just tripped. I grabbed it and out came a spear.
“I attacked the wolf, even though I’m not the fighting type. I stabbed it and when I pulled out, the spear head went launching through the air. I would have gone to find it, but I thought it was more important to make sure my dad was okay.” “Wow, that was a crazy story,” I said, just plain amazed. I started to look at Bret #3 differently, and knew that he was special in a way, just I didn’t know how yet.
